Vermont DOE News Release

During the 2002-2003 school year, Vermont driver education teachers and students will be introduced to Crash Site™, a state-of-the art, interactive CD-ROM program designed to help teens understand the consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs, the Vermont Department of Education announced today.

Crash Site supports the state’s already comprehensive driver education curriculum, which includes mock crashes as well as presentations by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), emergency medical and law enforcement personnel, automobile insurers and individuals convicted of driving under the influence.

“Vermont’s driver education curriculum is centered on risk prevention management,” said Vermont Driver Education Director Barry Ford. “Crash Site is interactive, so it catches and keeps a teen’s attention. Our goal is to use the program to reach as many teens as possible throughout Vermont to help them truly comprehend the perils of impaired driving.”

Teens confidentially input personal risk factors to see how they might fare under true-to-life circumstances. During two 45-minutes sessions, a student gathers clues from a lawyer, police detective, peer, counselor and doctor to solve the mystery of an impaired driving crash in which he or she was “involved” as a driver, passenger or by-stander. Video interviews with real teens and parents offer personal glimpses into life after an impaired driving crash. The program also includes a classroom discussion guide and parent-teen exercises.

Dangers of DUI

“Crash Site offers students an immediate and realistic sense of the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or marijuana,” said Dr. Simon Budman, founder and CEO of Inflexxion, Inc., creator of Crash Site. “Our program provides educators with a valuable resource. We are proud to partner with the Vermont Department of Education and contribute to their impaired driving prevention initiatives.”

The state’s use of Crash Site is funded by the Governor’s Highway Safety Program, which facilitates and supports a statewide network to promote safe driving behavior. Crash Site was developed by Inflexxion, Inc. with support from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and was clinically tested with high school students.

The program will be introduced to driver education teachers at Vermont’s Driver Traffic Safety Education meeting on October 4, 2002. Inflexxion representatives will introduce the program and discuss its design and capabilities. Throughout the school year, regional trainers will instruct individual teachers on the program’s use.
